Dit lijkt te mooi om waar te zijn, maar volgens MovieHole zou Martin Scorsese interesse hebben in een The Departed (2006) trilogie met Robert De Niro, gezien de succesvolle prent een nogal "Shakespeariaans einde" – maar dan dramatisch wel in mineur.
De film wordt beschouwd als één van de betere misdaadfilms uit 2006, en had zowel bijval bij critici als het grote publiek. Hoe dan ook blijft het originele Infernal Affairs (2002) (Mou Gaan Dou) zowel een betere film op gebied van intrige en spanning, maar zelfs ook op vlak van karakterontwikkeling. De Amerikaanse versie zoekt het in de extremen, terwijl het origineel veel meer ambigu is, wat het verhaal beter ten goede komt. Het eerste uur van The Departed was bijna feilloos, maar 2 uur die volgen hebben eigenlijk weinig om het lijf. Maar goed, Scorsese schudt toch een aantal briljante vondsten uit zijn mouw en ik heb toch van dit eerste uur met volle teugen genoten en moest er vervolgfilms komen met het legendarische duo De Niro/Scorsese, ben ik voorstander.
Het zou trouwens ook een nieuwigheid zijn voor Scorsese om sequels te maken. Persoonlijk heb ik in de meeste gevallen nog liever een sequel dan een remake. Helaas gaan deze twee films niet alleen sequels maar ook remakes zijn, gezien de Aziatische versie ook twee vervolgfilms had: Infernal Affairs II (2003) en Infernal Affairs III (2003). Dit stond er te lezen in het artikel:
Infernal Affairs, the film that the Golden Globe Award Winning film was based on, spawned two sequels, so it’s not at all surprising to hear that Scorsese is considering following up his version. And after the mint the first film has made at the box office, Warner Bros won’t be flipping the thumbs upside down to the idea either. Any sequel would wanna be damn good though… they’ve a lot to live up to; and Scorsese’s definitely a man who puts dignity right up there with Guinness beer. Did you know that De Niro was actually offered the role that Martin Sheen ended up playing in the film? True. Bob couldn’t do it because of his commitments to The Good Shepherd (2006).
Binnenkort zijn de Oscar-uitreikingen (23 februari 2007) en ik denk dat Martin Scorsese deze keer een Oscar in de wacht zal slepen, naar goede gewoonte voor een film die NIET zijn beste is. Maar na al die Oscarnominaties gun ik hem het beeldje. Wat betreft de kwaliteit van de vervolgfilms, wel, de tweede Infernal Affairs is best te doen. Het derde deel moet ik nog zien. Maar niets staat nog op papier, maar alle "grote regisseurs" tegenwoordig zijn bezig met trilogieën, dus zal Scorsese er toch vroeg of laat ook moeten aan beginnen – en waarom niet met The Departed.

Mark Wahlberg seems to be the source for all news on The Departed 2. The actor, who played the foul-mouthed, no-nonsense Sgt. Dignam in Martin Scorsese's award-winning film, was the first to reveal that there were even plans for a follow-up to the pic, which itself is a remake of the Hong Kong hit Infernal Affairs.
Wahlberg has also revealed that Robert De Niro is being considered for a key role in the sequel (there may even be two sequels). It was originally claimed that De Niro would play Martin Sheen's successor in the Massachusetts State Police. Not so, Wahlberg tells Empire Magazine.
"They're talking about bringing in De Niro to play a senator or a congressman", said Wahlberg. "You know, the corruption obviously going deeper and higher up the ranks — reaching up the political chain. So it'll be fun. And if it's a success, they're gonna do a prequel and bring everyone back…make it a trilogy."
Wahlberg adds that Departed screenwriter William Monahan is now working on the screenplay for part two, and that filming could begin at "the beginning of next year or end of this year."
It was recently reported, however, that all talk about Departed sequels was premature until the role of producer-turned-Paramount chief Brad Grey could be figured out. The rumor mill also suggests that, should Scorsese pass on doing the sequel(s), then Warner Bros. is eyeing Michael Mann or Alfonso Cuaron to replace him.
Screenwriter Monahan hails from Boston and infused The Departed with some local flavor. More than one publication has noted that Jack Nicholson's mobster Frank Costello bore more than a passing resemblance to infamous Boston crime boss/informant/fugitive James "Whitey" Bulger. Whitey's younger brother Billy was once the most powerful politician in Massachusetts; could that be an influence on De Niro's alleged politician character? Time will tell.
