Monkey3 started in Jan uary 2000 in Lausanne (Switserland). After a long period of jam sessions, the band decided to create their own material. In the beginning there was only Gioconda (guitar), Picasso (Bass) and Walter (Drums&Percussions). In 2001 Darkmann (keyboard's) joined the band for some live performances and the recording of the first demo in 2001. The actual band (2003) is composed by the original trio Gioconda, Walter and Picasso. Monkey's main Influences are: Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and some other Heavy rock bands. This is what Stonerrock.com had to say about this release: "Ahhhh. This is the kind of album I like best!! I've never heard a single thing about the band ever, not even their name, and their CD shows up and completely blows me away! Monkey3's debut self titled CD is absolutely killer in the same way as 35007's "Liquid" - but tons heavier and with many more twists and turns. Think Ufomammut meets 35007!!" This is Monkey3, a Stonerrock formation from Switzerland (...not Sweden , ...not Swaziland but Switzerland ...dude!). "Monkey3" was originally released by the band as a limited digi-pack on 1.000 copies and was only available via a few webstores and underground distribution. The band inked a deal with Buzzville Records in the beginning of 2004 and starts this collaboration with the re-issue of their debut album "Monkey3" (featuring alternative cover artwork).
With their debut album the band managed to score nothing but excellent reviews. Stonerrock.com called it ‘an absolute killer’. In Aardschok magazine (NL) it became 10 x ‘Eremetaal’ (one of the 10 highlighted releases of the month). With “39 Laps”, playing time is over. Monkey3 is a mature band that is one of the best live acts in the instru-scene and became part of that fast growing community (together with bands like e.g. Mono, Pelican, 5ive;… ).
Although “39 Laps” only contains 6 songs, including a Monkey-ish cover version of Ennio Morricone classic “Once Upon A Time In The West”, this album features the band’s most catchy recordings to date. The album wasn’t recorded in a traditional studio. The Monkey3 guys, together with their sound engineer, locked themselves in a cabin in the Swiss mountains and came out with this killer album….
